Job Description:


The Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) advances child health through innovation in the quality, cost and delivery of care. Representing 220 members, CHA is the voice of children’s hospitals nationally. Children’s hospitals are essential providers, setting the standard for the highest quality pediatric care while training the next generation of pediatricians. With its members, CHA champions policies that enable children’s hospitals to better serve children; leverages its position as the pediatric leader in data analytics to facilitate national collaborative and research efforts to improve performance; and spreads best practices to benefit the nation’s children. CHA has offices in Washington, D.C., and Lenexa, Kansas.

In consultation with Director, Advocacy and Outreach, the Specialist develops and implements advocacy communications that support CHA federal affairs goals and objectives. Primary responsibilities include: management of the Speak Now for Kids website and associated social media properties; creation of tools to increase member hospital engagement in Speak Now for Kids and other grassroots advocacy activities; administration of CHA’s legislative action center (accessed through Speak Now for Kids); program support of CHA lobby days; management of legislative advocacy content on CHA’s main website; and completion of special projects in support of CHA goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Develops editorial calendar for Speak Now for Kids.
  • Researches, creates and posts content on a daily basis to Speak Now for Kids, including proactive and reactive content such as blogs, posts to social media, and responding to those who react to Speak Now for Kids content.

  • Develops and implements social media campaigns and search engine optimization.

  • Provides data/metrics and analysis of website and social media properties that demonstrate impact.

  • Creates tools, materials and resources to increase member hospital and external engagement in Speak Now for Kids.


  • Serves as primary administrator of online legislative action center through Speak Now for Kids interface.
  • Guides hospitals on use of legislative action center for mobilization.

  • Creates and distributes legislative action center reports.


  • Supports programming for CHA lobby days to include the annual Government Relations Planning Meeting, Executive Health Policy Summit and Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day.
  • Develops and executes social media strategy to advance advocacy messages and increase engagement.


  • Contributes to development of content and helps manages production and dissemination of best-practice tools, resources and materials needed to support grassroots programming.
  • Cultivates positive relations with member hospitals.

Experience and Skills:


Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:


  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, marketing, communications, journalism, health policy, social sciences or related field.

Experience and Special Skills:

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in social media advocacy and other forms of advocacy communications

  • Self-starter and a team player

  • Excellent time and project management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and manage a multi-faceted online engagement program

  • Excellent written and oral communications

  • Data analysis skills

  • Training and presentation experience

  • Customer/Member relations

  • Knowledge of hospitals, health policy, children’s issues, state and federal legislative processes, and constituency building within a membership association preferred

  • Experience with WordPress, NationBuilder (or similar advocate database programs), and grassroots advocacy software required

  • Strong proficiency using Microsoft Office Suites and personal computer applications


Physical requirements

  • Extensive periods of sitting and keyboard/computer work

  • Communicates in person and over the phone

  • May on occasion be required to lift packages up to 25 lbs.

  • Travel: Up to 10%

  • General office environment

  • Regular and predictable attendance
